Life's Purpose

04.21.08

Sitting on the sand in the morning, looking out at the waves on the West side of Kauai, the sun felt warm on my back. I was waiting for a ride to go and help demolish a house. Kind of a “Day Labor” thing. It was so beautiful I should have been stoked, but I wasn't. I was stressed out by one simple question, “What is the purpose of my life?”

Have you ever felt the weight of that question in your life? Since then I have found the answer to that question and the joy that comes from knowing it. Sometimes it seems like it’s too simple an answer and there’s no doubt that the specifics play out differently in each individual’s life. But, it’s the answer God gives us. It’s found in Romans 8:29. Verse 28 says all things work together for good and if we stop there we start imagining all the things that could mean; new board, perfect waves, sweet tan (maybe not, you get the point). But we have to read on. Verse 29 defines what good is and declares God’s purpose in the life of every born again person. “For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son…” God’s purpose for you is to be like Jesus in character and priorities.

Are you alive to the fact that God will use the struggles and victories of today to mold you into the image of Jesus? Are you allowing God to do this work or fighting against it? Why not take some time today to enjoy the freedom of knowing that God is in control and is working out His plan of changing you. That’s why the book of James says we can be stoked even in tough times. Of course, this only applies to those that are born again. Have you been born again? If not, check out the “Who is Jesus” section of our web page and let God work a bigger purpose in your life.
