Freedom from Sin

03.31.08

Have you ever been on the beach totally bummed at the closed out mess before you and some tourist says, “Boy, the waves look great!” Not to be cruel, but they just don’t get it. Often people think, “Man that guy partied hard his whole life and then came to Jesus just before he died. That’s the way to go.” Not to be cruel, but they just don’t get it.

In the Bible, the book of Romans, chapter 6 and verse 18 says, “You have been set free from sin…” We don’t generally use that terminology about good things. You know, the part about being set free. That’s more like the language we use regarding being trapped in something bad. The point is this, we are all born as slaves to sin and Jesus came to set us free. Often “sin” looks and is really fun but that doesn’t mean it’s good. It’s kind of like dropping in on a totally unmakeable wave over gnarly reef – the drop might be fun but it’s not a good thing.

This week, take a moment to think about the fact that what we often think is good, isn’t. That’s why God calls it sin. Think about the fact that Jesus wants to “set us free” from sin and that’s a good, no, it’s a great thing! What a great God!

So, who do you surf for?
