Empty Promises?

10.01.07

From trade shows to magazine ads, the surfing industry is pushing a way of life along with the promises of what that life will bring. But, do those promises come true? We are told to not conform to traditional (or religious) guidelines, be your own master, choose your own destiny. Don’t let anything keep you from the waves – not family or work or anything. Because, surfing will ultimately fulfill you. But, it’s not true! Look at all the broken families, hurting children and wounded adults because someone chased the waves and blew off responsibilities. In fact, many of the “poster children” of this image are devastated when the cameras are off. They look cool when the film is rolling but what about when the party ends.

2 Peter 2:17-19 says: “These people are as useless as dried-up springs or as mist blown away by the wind. They are doomed to blackest darkness. They brag about themselves with empty, foolish boasting. With an appeal to twisted sexual desires, they lure back into sin those who have barely escaped from a lifestyle of deception. They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you.”

Proverbs24:1 says, “Do not envy wicked men…”
The Bible teaches that ultimately only God fulfills us.
Who do you surf for?
